A slice of life

Pubs and Pub Names

The following expressions are typically British.

'I'm just nipping down to the local'.
'I'm just popping out to the boozer'..
'I'm just going to drop in at 'The Crown''. .

Yes, they all refer to that great British institution: 'The pub', otherwise known as 'the local', 'the boozer' or the even 'the watering hole'. The verbs employed ('to nip down to', 'to pop out to' and 'to drop in at') all suggest a quick visit, as emphasized by the word 'just'. This is false. Pubs are places in which to spend plenty of time. The verbs are thus weak excuses to justify pub visits which may last from one hour to five.

Daily pub activities are brought to a close, at night, in gentle stages: First, the landlord calls, 'Last orders at the bar' and for the next twenty minutes is inundated with requests. Then he calls, 'Time at the bar', meaning no more drinks will be served, and is inundated with complaints. Finally, after a further twenty minutes, is 'kicking out time', when the locals are asked leave the premises and the landlord is inundated with black looks.

Pubs are houses for the public (Public Houses) where social activities take place involving the local people ('locals') relaxing with friends and drinks. Sadly, however, the traditional pub is now disappearing. Once the haunt of working men, beer and skittles, greater profits now come from food and pop music. Consequently, as pubs become feminized, beer is losing its predominance and being replaced by fruit juices and 'alcopops'. Locals are loyal to 'their' pubs which are distinguished by pub names on pub signs, many of which relate to British heritage. The most common pub name is 'The Crown'. The strangest, in my opinion, is 'The Bucket of Blood'. Here are some more: .

Commonest names

Red Lion
The Fox and Hounds
White Hart
Royal Oak
